the northeast chorale
Founded in 2015 and led by Artistic Director Phil Holzman, the Northeast Chorale is now in its ninth season. Today the Chorale is composed of more than forty singers who come from all over the Twin Cities. Additionally, the Chorale has invited numerous musicians to perform. This includes Brass 360, pianists Andrew Peterson, Bitna Jeong, Kevin Hobbs, and Grace Choi, organist Marilyn Lueth, and the Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church Choirs. Through the combination of the Northeast Chorale singers and the many talented musicians in our neighborhoods we strive to bring artists together to build a strong and dynamic community.
Artistic Director Phil Holzman
Phil Holzman has been the artistic and music director of the Northeast Chorale since its inception in the fall of 2015. Phil started directing choirs at a very young age in his home church in a small town near Reading, Pennsylvania, so he has been doing this for over 40 years. However, he has not lost his passion for helping people make wonderful choral music.
He has been the minister of worship and music at Gustavus Adolphus Lutheran Church in Northeast Minneapolis since 2007, where he plays the organ and piano and directs vocal and handbell choirs. Organizing and directing the Northeast Chorale has given Phil another outlet for his desire to help people make music together.
Phil has a Music Education degree from Lebanon Valley College in Annville, Pennsylvania and has served Lutheran churches as organist, choir director, youth director, education director, and now parish administer at GA Church (in addition to his music duties). He is a bona fide “church geek,” having done a little bit of everything in churches over the years. Music, however, is his number one passion.
He hopes that the northeast Minneapolis community will come to treasure the music and the people of the Northeast Chorale as much as he does as this choir continues to grow and become an integral part of this community.
